We are certainly not alone in the attempt to organise and secure better conditions in education workplaces. In fact, we think it’s really important to draw attention to a constantly growing constellation of kindred collectives and initiatives that really demonstrate how “an injury to one is an injury to all” – each in their particular way, according to specific circumstances and resources. Here below is a list, subject to updates, of groups we are in touch with or express our solidarity to.
We hope to see this list grow with time, so get in touch with us if you feel that your group shares a similar perspective on organising in education!
- UC Strike for COLA: Precarious teaching staff initially at UC Santa Cruz and then across the University of California who started a wildcat strike in December 2019 demanding a Cost Of Living Adjustment. See: payusmoreucsc.com and @payusmoreucsc
- Solidarity Federation (SolFed): Anarcho-syndacalist union, of which some of us are members, with several local groups in the UK and affiliated to the IWA (International Workers Association). See: Solidarity Federation and IWA
- Sussex Precarious Academics (SPA): a group of casualised academic staff within the University of Sussex who have mobilised in response to the leaked Financial Review Guidelines (FRGs) document, which suggested sacking fixed-term teaching staff en masse in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.
